Gifts for Christ

"They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh."

Mt 2:1-12

Note what the Magi offer the child Jesus, even before they open the physical treasures they brought. In prostrating themselves before him, they offer him first and foremost their humble submission. Their other gifts, while materially valuable, are primarily symbolic of who Jesus is and of what he would accomplish while on earth. The gifts of themselves, however, hold no symbolism. They are instead what they appear to be: real lives laid at the feet of Jesus, laid down out of love.

We may not have physical gold, frankincense, or myrrh to offer Christ, but each of us has our own life with which to do as we see fit. Who or what is a more fitting recipient for this priceless gift of self than our Lord, the creator and ultimate lover of our heart?

Ask Jesus how he wishes to receive your life and your love. Does he wish for the gold of a life spent in service? The frankincense of a life spent in prayer? The myrrh of a life totally abandoned to his will? His answer will illumine not only your path to heaven but your way of true happiness, fulfillment, and inner peace too.
