"In the beginning was the Word,
And the Word was with God,
And the Word was God."
Jn 1:1-18
How comforting it is, as one calendar year rolls info another, to be reminded of God's eternity! Alone in the universe, God is. He is not created. He is not dependent. He is, and always has been, and always will be.
The turn of the year reminds us of the transience of life, how quickly time passes, and how easily created things are forever birthed, changed, passed on. Through it all, God is. He is ever-loving, ever-merciful, ever far beyond our comprehension. He is.
To our feeble, time-bound minds and bodies, what comfort and surety God's eternity gives! We need not strive to make ourselves immortal or ensure that our memory lives on after us. Rather, we can rest peacefully, simply, in his arms, accepting gratefully the inevitability of our own gradual passing from the world. The world does not need us. It is God, not us, who sustains all things. But in his greatness, God holds a place for us in his eternal heart. When we pass from this world completely, we will find eternal rest in him.
