"He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him."
Mk 1:21-28
Unclean spirits are not something to take lightly. In our day we have an elaborate and top-secret exorcism ritual to drive them out of a person who is possessed. In Jesus' day, such individuals were forced to live outside of the camp or town, away from everyone else. They are rightly to be feared, both for the power they can hold over a human being and also for the very evilness of their nature.
Watching Jesus command and drive out an unclean spirit, then, must have been every bit as amazing as his onlookers felt it was.
If Jesus can command and drive out even unclean spirits, who are we to think that our petty, human-driven sins are beyond his power to dominate? They are as drops in a bucket. Drops of superglue in an empty bucket, perhaps, but nothing a little divine acetone can't clean away easily. We never need to hesitate in bringing our struggles and sins before God. Everything, even the most evil of spirits, is subject to him.
Prepare yourself to be amazed by the awesome power of God!
