What Does My Soul Praise?

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord.

Lk 1:46-56

Mary begins her Magnificat by reflecting on the disposition of the innermost, eternal part of her being: her soul. My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord. And so it does. Her entire Magnificat, and her entire life, constantly point to the glory and beneficence of God.

Consider who or what your own soul praises. Whom or what do you constantly glorify with your words, your attitudes, your very being? Is it God? Or is it yourself? Perhaps you proclaim the greatness of the pro-life movement, or anti-racism, or another human being. Ultimately, unless God is the aim and desire of our work, any good we might seem to accomplish is self-oriented and devoid of the deeper good it might have contained.

Ask yourself this question: "Would I be willing to hand this work over to others if God asked me to?" If the answer is no, take your relationship with this cause or person to deep prayer. Remember that God is fully capable of seeing every good work to its completion. In fact, he's much more capable of this than you are. Only by trusting him entirely and living for his praise alone will we experience true peace in this life and in the next.

Jesus, I trust you with everything I value in life. May all glory be yours, now and forever.
